Air Status

Sep 30, 2020

With China's extensive manufacturing expansion reaching its limit, China's position as a world factory has been established, and China has also entered a peak of environmental pressure. In 2016, Yale University released the "Environmental Performance Index: 2016 report" (Environmental Performance Index: 2016 report). The report mainly uses test index scores to rank the performance of 180 countries around the world on the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). One of the key indicators is air quality. China's air quality ranks second from the bottom, and it is the worst-hit area of air pollution. The average value of nitrogen dioxide is 15.29, ranking 176th; the average of PM2.5 is 2.256, ranking 180th, the bottom-most in the world! Relevant statistics show that there are currently about 2.1 million children who die of upper respiratory tract infections in my country each year, and the cause of death of more than 1 million children is directly or indirectly related to indoor air pollution, especially in some newly built and newly renovated kindergartens and home indoor environments. The pollution is very serious. A survey conducted by Beijing Children's Hospital showed that 90% of the families of children with leukemia admitted to the hospital had been renovated within six months. Based on this, experts speculate that harmful substances in indoor decoration materials may be an important cause of childhood leukemia. The concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 suspended particulate matter in the atmospheric environment of Chinese cities generally exceeds the standard, which is mainly manifested as soot-type pollution. Sulfur dioxide pollution has always been at a relatively high level; the total emissions of motor vehicle exhaust pollutants have increased rapidly; nitrogen oxide pollution has increased. 1. Sulfur dioxide. The continuous increase in coal consumption has led to a sharp increase in total sulfur dioxide emissions. Among various emission sources, power plants and industrial boilers account for 70% of emissions. The scope of acid rain pollution caused by sulfur dioxide emissions has continued to expand. It has now spread to most areas south of the Yangtze River and east of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, covering Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Anhui , Shandong and more than ten provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. At present, the regions where the average annual precipitation pH value is below the critical value of 5.6 acid rain account for about 30% of the country's area. 2. Smoke and dust. The main sources of smoke and dust are thermal power plants and industrial boilers. Since most local power plants use low-efficiency dust collectors, the smoke and dust emissions are generally 5-10 times that of large-scale national power plants. The smoke and dust index brought by factories that fail to meet the pollution discharge standards in various places has increased year by year. 3. Motor vehicle exhaust pollution. Driven by economic growth, the number of motor vehicles in my country has increased rapidly in recent years, especially in some large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other motor vehicles at a rate much higher than the national average. The total emissions of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons emitted by automobiles are increasing year by year. At the same time, due to the dense urban population and relatively large traffic volume, the proportion of motor vehicle exhaust pollution in urban air pollution is also increasing. Air pollution has become China’s top priority for people’s livelihood.
